This Month At Grounds For Peace Coffeehouse

At Average

At Average's eclectic indie-folk arrangements and instrumentation pair with lyrical influences from diverse subjects including history, cinema, God and myths.  At Average originally launched after a splintering of the Midwest-touring band The Northern Skies.
At Average is: Nathan Schleicher on lead vocals and various acoustic instruments; Emily Carlson on organ and strings and Nic Cole-Klaes on double bass. In the spirit of Sufjan Stevens, Iron & Wine, and Ray LaMontagne, they are carving out an authentic folksy breed within the *indie* genre. The scope of their original content ranges from songs about myths, history, God, and the struggle to be greater than normal.
Best known for his work as co-founder of The Northern Skies, Nathan helped to write and release four records and toured across the mid-west, playing over 70 shows a year. Major performances included Arts Beats & Eats, opening for a Comedy Central Tour, and Hoxeyville Festival, where they opened for nationals like Keller Williams and Todd Snider.
At long last, the band celebrates the release of their highly anticipated EP, Black Hatted. From LA to Nashville to Detroit, the band brought in help from all over the country to complete the EP.  Contributing performances by guest artists such as Steven Wesley Guiles, Nina White, Dan Vaillancourt, Mark Damian, Bonnie Shippling, and the Olive String Trio season the tracks with diverse harmonies, swelling orchestrations, spaghetti western riffs, and even bellowing tones from a cathedral organ. When all the required notes were accounted for the songs were sent to young Nashville producer, Mike Odmark, out of Jars of Clay-owned studio, 'Gray Matters' for mixing and mastering.
The EP includes with their single - "Black Hatted Man" an ode to cinematic villians, "Paper Son" a stormy and bitter song, "Case For Love" an organ and strings juggernaut, "Transfiguration" a theological narrative, and concludes with the whimsical and semi-biographical "Art School Girl". A pre-order link can be found on their website:  www.ataverage.com or www.ataverage.bandcamp.com.
The band expects a quick follow-up CD due for release in Fall 2012.
